About zolpidem
Zolpidem is a sleeping pill that can be taken for the short-term treatment of severe insomnia.
It helps you fall asleep faster and makes you less likely to wake up during the night. It works by affecting a calming chemical in your brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
Zolpidem comes in tablets. It is only available with a prescription.
Key facts
Zolpidem takes about 1 hour to take effect.
You will usually take it for a few days or weeks (up to 4 weeks). It is only used for a short period because your body gets used to it quickly. After a few weeks, it is unlikely to have the same effect. Your body can also become dependent on it.
Common side effects are a metallic taste in the mouth or dry mouth and feeling sleepy during the day.
Do not drink alcohol while you are taking zolpidem. Having them together can cause you to go into a deep sleep where you have a hard time waking up.
If zolpidem makes you sleepy during the day, do not drive a car, ride a bicycle, or use machinery.
