How does this medicine work? What will it do for me?
Zopiclone is in a class of medications called sedative-hypnotics. It is used for short-term, symptomatic relief of sleep disorders. Zopiclone may help with difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, or early morning awakenings. Zopiclone should generally not be taken for more than 7 to 10 consecutive days. It should be used only by people for whom sleep disturbance results in problems functioning during the day.
This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all forms or approved for all conditions discussed here. Additionally, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.

What form(s) does this medication come in?
5 milligrams
Each round white tablet, marked “IMOVANE 5” on one side and the “rPr” logo on the other, contains 5 mg of zopiclone. Non-medicinal ingredients: corn starch, dicalcium phosphate, lactose, magnesium stearate and sodium carboxymethyl starch; coating: hydroxypropylmethylcellulose and titanium dioxide.
7.5 milligrams
Each oval, scored blue tablet, marked “IMOVANE” on one side and the “rPr” logo on each side of the score on the other side, contains 7.5 mg of zopiclone. The 7.5 mg tablet can be divided into two equal 3.75 mg parts. Non-medicinal ingredients: calcium phosphate dihydrate dibasic, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate and microcrystalline cellulose; coating: carnauba wax, aluminum lacquer #1 blue FD&C, white 2 opadry II and polyethylene glycol.
How should I use this medicine?
The usual starting dose is 3.75 mg taken just before bedtime as needed to help with difficulty sleeping. The recommended adult dose of zopiclone ranges from 3.75 mg to 7.5 mg. The maximum daily dose is 5 mg for older people, people with reduced liver or kidney function, and people taking certain medications. This medication may be habit-forming and should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Generally, you should not use zopiclone for more than 7 to 10 days at a time.
If you have been taking this medication regularly for a long time, do not suddenly stop taking it without talking to your doctor.
Many things can affect the dose of a medication a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a different dosage than those listed here, do not change the way you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medication when sleeping through the night is not possible or before you need to be active and functional. In such situations, problems with judgment and memory lapses may occur. Your body needs time to eliminate the medication from your system. Wait at least 12 hours after taking this medication before driving or doing other activities that require mental alertness.
Store this medication at room temperature, protect from light and moisture, and keep out of the reach of children.
Do not throw medications into wastewater (for example, down the sink or toilet) or into household trash. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines that you no longer need or that have expired.
Who should NOT take this medication?
Do not take this medicine if you:
are allergic to zopiclone or any of the ingredients in this medicine
has myasthenia gravis
have severe breathing difficulties
have severe liver disease
have sleep apnea
have previously experienced complex sleep behaviors, such as sleepwalking, talking, eating, or driving while taking zopiclone or other sleep medications
What side effects are possible with this medication?
Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent.
