Lorazepam belongs to a group of medications called benzodiazepines.
It is used to treat anxiety and anxiety-related sleep problems.
It can also be taken to help you relax before surgery or other medical or dental treatment. This is known as pre-med.
It is thought to work by increasing levels of a calming chemical in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
Lorazepam is available only by prescription. It comes in tablet form and as a liquid that you swallow.
It may also be given as an injection in the hospital if you have a seizure or attack.

Lorazepam tablets and liquid start working in about 20 to 30 minutes. The full sedative effect lasts about 6 to 8 hours.
The most common side effect is feeling sleepy (drowsy) during the day.
It is not recommended to take lorazepam for more than 4 weeks.
If lorazepam makes you drowsy, do not drive, ride a bike, or use any tools or machinery.
Do not drink alcohol while taking lorazepam. It can make you sleep very deeply. You may have trouble breathing and difficulty waking up.
