This combination medication is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. It contains an opioid pain reliever (hydrocodone) and a non-opioid pain reliever (acetaminophen). Hydrocodone works in the brain to change the way your body feels and responds to pain. Acetaminophen can also reduce fever.

Read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking this medication and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor. You can take this medicine with or without food. If you have nausea, it may help to take this medication with food. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about other ways to decrease nausea (such as lying down for 1 to 2 hours with as little head movement as possible).

If you are using a liquid form of this medication, use a medication measuring device to carefully measure the prescribed dose. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children, dosing is also based on weight. Do not increase your dose, take the medication more often, or take it for longer than prescribed. Appropriately discontinue the medication when instructed to do so.

Pain medications work best if they are used when the first signs of pain appear. If you wait until the pain has gotten worse, the medicine may not work as well.

If you have ongoing pain (for example, due to cancer), your doctor may direct you to also take long-acting opioid medications. In that case, this medication may be used for sudden (breakthrough) pain only when needed. Other pain relievers (such as ibuprofen, naproxen) may also be prescribed. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using this product safely with other medications.

Suddenly stopping this medication may cause withdrawal, especially if you have used it for a long time or in high doses. To avoid withdrawal, your doctor may reduce your dose slowly. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you develop any withdrawal symptoms, such as restlessness, mental/mood changes (including anxiety, trouble sleeping, thoughts of suicide), watery eyes, runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, muscle aches, or changes in behavior.

When this medication is used for a long time, it may not work as well. Talk to your doctor if this medicine stops working well.

Although it helps many people, this medication can sometimes cause addiction. This risk may be higher if you have a substance use disorder (such as drug/alcohol overuse or addiction). Take this medication exactly as prescribed to reduce the risk of addiction. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Tell your doctor if your pain does not improve or if it worsens.
